Teaching Your Family About DiabetesI went with my family over an in-laws house today. They knew that I had diabetes, so they were very courteous to ask what I could and could not eat. I thought that that was very sweet of them. However, I was not privy to this earlier conversation and my wife really could not answer. We arrived at about 3:00 pm and the hostess, my sister-in-law put out fruit and started fussing over me regarding what she put out and what else she should put out on the table. Personally, I do not like the fuss over me and as I told her - "Just put out what you would for everyone else and I will take what I can eat in whatever portions I need." My wife also tried to chime in and made some very incorrect statements about my meal plan. This actually got me upset. First I was angry that she did not really know about what I can and cannot eat. However, she very rarely does any cooking or food shopping - I am "in charge" of the kitchen (and she is in charge of the rest of the house) [just a joke]. Then I was upset with myself -- I should really sit down with her and explain what my meal plan is and why it is set up in such a manner. I resolve to teach her all that I know about diabetes from my extensive one month experience - then we can continue to learn together.
