What is A1C?Tuesday, July 25, 2006
Going through some of the diabetes related websites, I keep on reading about A1C. At first I thought that it was another name for the blood glucose results that you get from the blood monitor. I was wrong. The A1C Test (or A1c Hemoglobin test) shows how much glucose (sugar) is within a red blood cell. Not only that, it allows you to see what the overall blood level has been during the past 120 day period (the life of a normal red blood cell). This result gives you and your doctor a real look at how you are doing over the long term. From what I have read, this should allow you and your doctor to better treat you and will probably adjust medication based on the results.
