Watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate FactorySaturday, July 15, 2006 Tonight I watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. No, not the Johnny Depp Version, the good one, the original 1971 version with Gene Wilder. It is one of my all-time favorite movies. However, it was a little depressing watching the part where they go into the chocolate room. These kids can eat all the candy they want (as Wonka said, "everything is eatible, I mean edible") in the room, but it then hit me, I cannot do that any more. I can have a little piece of candy, if that much, and then that is all. I am not a big candy snacker, but recently, I would love to binge out on something, anything. I am home alone tonight (that does not occur very often), and that usually means that I will over eat all of the things I should not be eating now - but I was good. I made myself a steak (only 8 ounces) with a bunch of different vegetables (raw and cooked). But if I did not have diabetes, I would have ordered out for something fried or very fatty without any salad on the side, on the top or anywhere near my meal. This is also one of those times when I would also purchase some type of sweet, such as Enterman's Marshmallow covered Chocolate Cake with a quart of whole milk. Both the box of cake and the container of milk would be finished by the next morning. In contrast, my snack tonight was a few pita pieces and non-fat cheese. Physically, I am not hungry. Mentally, I am starving. Willy Wonka has gone from being a story of fiction to a true personal fantasy.
